Rainy Days and Mondays...

So, here it is Monday.

The B-day has come and gone and of course, the pretty pink hued birthday wrap is still sitting on my needles. Not even close to being finished.

But it's OK.

I justify this because, I have yet to see my friend. So until I see her, I have time. This may not make sense to you, but as a life long procrastinator, it makes total sense to me.

I actually made a huge attempt this weekend and was making good progress, until I realized that I probably wouldn't even see her to give it to her, so therefore I could catch up on episodes of CSI: Miami on the DVR and play "catch" with my son (more like duck). His aim isn't very good, but he's two so you have to cut him some slack.

Anyway, I will continue to push on and hopefully I will meet my "deadline".

Slowing pulling the thread...

I am sort of at loss of where to start, but I will give it my best shot...

I have many roles (like everyone), including wife and mother, and sometimes I become wrapped up in being all these different people that I slowly start to unravel. To help maintain sanity, busy the hands and keep the voices at bay, I knit.

Lately, I have been knitting a lot.

Unfortunately, I suffer from knitting attention deficit disorder (self diagnosed) and struggle to complete projects. I find it difficult to focus on the current project and begin to dream about all the yarns waiting in my stash or new patterns I have just discovered or have dreamt about. I do my best to keep it in check, but currently I have three projects started, two on deck and my mother-in-law just presented me with a bag filled with enough yarn, buttons, and free patterns to make a sweater for my two year old son.

My mother-in-law does not knit herself, but has several friends that do. She was out with a few of them one weekend and found herself in a yarn shop that was going out of business... and thought of me. She is very sweet, but unfortunately and inadvertently has caused my "disorder" to spiral out of control.

So, while dreaming of the new yarn and fabulous sweater possibilities for my wonderful son, I desperately struggle to finally finish the shawl I started for my very good friend about a year ago for her birthday which is on Friday. Yup, this Friday. Go ahead, laugh and point. I will continue to hope though.

Part of the problem is that I gave myself too much time. Seems impossible, but I felt I had time to play around with the design, so I switched the pattern... five times! (That I consciously remember.) Then I decided I didn't like the yarn I chose first, so I switched the yarn... twice. I finally settled on a pattern and a yarn, but that happened about two weeks ago and now I don't have enough time because with all the planning and changing I have lost interest and started other projects and bought new yarn, etc, etc.

In the midst of all this, after years of knitting items for others, I finally found the perfect yarn and sweater/tunic pattern to knit for myself. I have made hats and scarves; the occasional bag, but never a whole sweater for myself. So this is sort of monumental. I have a good portion completed so I know I will pick it up again once the shawl fiasco resolves itself. Plus, when I think about the sweater sitting on the opposite compartment of my knitting bag, I still get giddy with excitement about it's creation. So, I have that going for me as well.

The work in progress, is a fair isle baby sweater I started in the Spring before the heat of summer hit. It is knit with an acrylic fiber, but I doubled the sport weight yarn to make it a warm, wind proof, winter sweater. Once I work out my other issues and make some more headway on my sweater, I will probably pick it up again. Plus, the baby I was knitting it for is now too big for the size I'm making, so it will probably be gifted to someone else or possibly I can give it too the child for her doll?

This is why I usually force myself to set a deadline (and keep it!) when it comes to knitting for babies and children. Otherwise, they would be getting the item when they turn 30.

Besides the sweater for my son, I also have a pattern and yarn I purchased to make a camisole waiting to be started. And for about two years I have been going to knit and felt a bag I saw and have had the yarn for about as long. I don't have a pattern for that one, but plan to wing it.

First and foremost, I have to make some decisions regarding a certain pink hued shawl. I'll keep you posted...
