2008: Year of the new hard drive...

Well, after the trials and tribulations of 2007, I was really looking forward to 2008.

A new beginning, if you will.

I am not one for new year resolutions. I believe in making life changes when you need to-- not waiting for the pinnacle moment of ringing in the new year.

I do, however, think that if you are one that needs to make a commitment like that, go ahead and do it! I can just never stick with it when it is presented in such a manner.

Let's face facts. I crave organization, order and cleanliness (after all I am a Virgo), but I have a child under 5, a husband who is domestically challenged, 3 cats, and we live in a very old house (almost 100 years old).

Dirt. Mold. Clutter. Chaos.

I'm learning to embrace these things, but on days when nothing seems to be going right, it is incredibly difficult to find comfort and solace when you can't stop sneezing nor find the remote.

It is increasingly difficult when you try to sit on the couch and you have to move a large pile of your husband's and child's sundries and two cats to finally sit. And when you finally do achieve a sitting position, something sharp pokes you in your side... "Oh, there's the remote!! I've been looking for that for two days!!!" or more likely, "Damn it, who left the fork in between the cushions!?!"

So, I have decided that I am going to try to be less frustrated by things I have little or no control over and try to find the laughter, rather than the ire. Not really a resolution, more like a mental adjustment. It just happens to coincide with the new year.

That said...

I bought Josh an iPod for Christmas. The swanky one with the video viewing capabilities. I figured that he deserved a nice splurge. Luckily, he was elated! And I was elated that he was elated!

That is, until we both realized that our operating system for our 5 1/2 year old mac was not compatible with his iPod.

Having slightly more knowledge about the task at hand than my darling husband, I started researching the problem. Long story short, we needed a new operating system. And probably some more RAM. I figured while I was at it I would also have them figure out why it was making horrible noises too!

So, I dropped off the CPU and crossed my fingers.

A few days later when they called me back I was told that there seemed to be no problem with the CPU. It was just loud because it was an older machine. Phew.

Somewhat relieved, I told them to go ahead with the upgrade.

Well... four days, a new hard drive, no ability to rescue any of our data from the previous hard drive, and a huge migraine later, I am really trying to find the laughter.

And the computer people never actually did the upgrade, so the very fancy MP3 player still won't work-- The whole reason I started this exercise in futility in the first place. We did, however, lose all of our files from our music library (and everything else), so I guess it doesn't really matter anyway.

Still trying to find the laughter.
